About This Place

Nestled in the heart of Portland’s NW Kearney Street, CAFE NELL is a vibrant American restaurant, bar, and brunch spot that artfully blends rustic neighborhood charm with an innovative culinary touch. Whether you're seeking a leisurely brunch, a lively evening with crafted cocktails, or a cozy café experience, CAFE NELL delivers with style and flavor.

The menu at CAFE NELL reads like a love letter to comfort food with a creative edge. Start your day with their renowned Bloody Mary with Bacon, a savory cocktail that perfectly balances smoky and spicy notes—making it a beloved ritual for locals like Rich Furman and his family. Crave something sweet? The Crème Anglaise French Toast offers a decadently smooth vanilla custard finish paired with tender, pillowy bread that melts in your mouth. For a hearty brunch, the Huevos Rancheros and Fall Vegetable and Sausage Hash are layered with bold flavors and perfectly cooked textures, ensuring each bite delights your palate.

When the day turns to evening, CAFE NELL's dinner menu shines with dishes that invite sharing and savoring. The Tomato Bruschetta is a vibrant starter, featuring grilled baguette topped with caramelized onions, confit garlic ricotta, and cherry tomatoes marinated in a fragrant basil and sherry vinegar dressing. Meanwhile, the Flatbread balances the smoky heat of harissa hummus with tender braised beef and fresh Mediterranean accents like tzatziki and feta—a dish that reflects the kitchen’s creative global influences.

Food aficionados and cocktail lovers alike will find solace in CAFE NELL’s impressive drink selection. Their champagne cocktails, such as the tangy Lemon Sparkler or the uniquely complex Portlandia Champagne, elevate your dining experience while pairing impeccably with the artisan menu. Classic drinks like the Manhattan and Martini are prepared with precision, delivering a smooth sip every time. Plus, with a rotating draft beer selection and happy wines by the glass, there’s a perfect sip for every mood.

The atmosphere here is inviting and laid-back with a neighborhood cafe vibe that customers like George Gonzalez and Connie Strong adore. The space boasts a cozy bar, indoor seating, and a covered outdoor patio, making it a versatile spot for both intimate meals and social gatherings. The friendly, attentive service complements the thoughtful menu, creating a dining experience that feels both relaxing and special.

Several regulars mention the crave-worthy “home fries,” described by customers as addictive, nugget-sized steak fries that pair beautifully with the brunch classics. The French Dip with its flavorful beef and rich au jus sauce is another favorite, earning praise for its perfectly balanced boldness and comfort.

Whether you're indulging in a leisurely brunch or unwinding with expertly crafted cocktails, CAFE NELL encapsulates the best traits of a Portland bistro: inventive yet approachable food, a warm atmosphere, and a genuine love for hospitality. It’s a place where familiar flavors feel new again and every meal invites you to slow down and savor the moment.

Excellent food and service in a laid back setting. The omelette and salad were perfectly prepared and filling. The crispy “home fries” are really nugget sized steak fries and totally addictive.

Cute little neighborhood cafe with a bar, indoor and covered outdoor seating. It's an artisan menu so expect small to medium sized appetizers and entree dishes. If you come in with a large appetite, you might need two entrees. The flavors are really great and the cocktails are tasty.

It's become a tradition for my dad and I to come here brunch and a Bloody Mary before I go back to Seattle after Thanksgiving. I do wish they still offered the eggs Benedict brunch on Fridays. The sausage hash is really good, and this year I did the chilaquiles, which was also very tasty. The Bloody Marys have changed over the years, it seems like they've become less grandiose and more simplified, but they are still very tasty and have a day's worth veggies. All in all, I do look forward to stopping in each year for that breakfast and Bloody Mary.

It's been a while since I visited this place. I liked that they have a great outdoor seating area that's covered. I had the French Dip and a side of fries. I enjoyed the beef from the sandwich, and the dip made the meat better. The fries were off good size to share with another person. Overall, it was a good place to go to, and i would go back for happy hour.
